The Civil Rights movement was a huge example to other groups of Americans who wanted to get their point across. Protests now began to emerge everywhere for groups such as: students, women, and Latinos. As society began to reject the normal of everyday life, a counterculture began to emerge. The people who founded this were called Hippies and often sought out a completely different lifestyle from the rest of society. Many hippies lived in communes where everyone shared everything and was a big group living arrangement. The counterculture began to influence all aspects of American life. Clothing and hairstyles began to change and express how people felt. Music also began to be made to make people think and express the ideals of society at the time.
